Given the Oh I did it better than you suck it up buttercup I’m a female shirt and by the same token and choice, I always want to do right by my kids, no matter how long ago I taught them. I smiled at the sales guy and my former student and tried to talk them down. Not a chance, I was told. So I stood up, thanked them, and said I needed to go crunch some numbers to see if I could work the new price into my budget. I promised to give them a call in a couple of hours. As I prepared to pull out of the driveway at the Nissan dealership, I hit redial on my cell phone. the sales guy I’ve been dealing with that the Chevy dealer had called me at 9:00 that morning, making one last push to sell me that Malibu. Now, at 10:30, I was calling him to tell him that I would be at his dealership in 15 minutes, ready to do the deal on the Malibu. I absolutely love that car for the 4 years I owned it until I was rear-ended (while I was at a dead stop) by a pickup truck at a stoplight and shoved into the pickup truck in front of me. I bought another one from the same sales guy at the same dealership. I fully anticipate buying my next one from him, whatever that might be. I’ve also sent five friends to him who have bought cars from him. A couple of days later, I got a call from a lawyer at the state capitol. He demanded to know who my lawyer was. I told him I was representing myself. He started basically threatening me. He said there was no way I could win, and that the court would assess me attorney’s fees for the school. It would cost me thousands of dollars. I told him I wouldn’t withdraw the suit. He told me to think about it, and I told him I didn’t need to. The court date came around. The lawyer came into the courthouse about the same time I did. He walked into the courtroom first, and said, “Good morning, your honor.” The judge said hello and asked him his name. I came in right after him, looked up at the judge, and said, “Hi, Jim.” The judge looked up and said, “Oh, hi, Eric.” I had made it a point to be able to see the attorney’s face when this was spoken. His chin dropped an inch or so and his mouth gaped open a bit.  I was valedictorian of our class and was never inducted into the society. In my case, they were correct, and I had no problem accepting their decision.

My wife and children had left for the week to visit her mother who lived 500 miles away, and I was getting ready to call her one evening just to chat. Then it struck me: she’s always calling her mom, I could program the number into the phone and get brownie points. Now, we had never used the front door. We had only been in the house for a couple of weeks, and to tell you the truth, I had only entered from the side door where the cars are parked. Well, as I said, I had never used the front door, so I didn’t realize how many locks and chains were on it. Needless to say, it took me a while to get the door open, and when I did there were two policemen standing there – one on the stoop and the other on the sidewalk with his hand near his hip. But as I readied myself for bed a thought struck me: they believed me. That was a pretty lame excuse as far as I was concerned, but they believed me. They didn’t want to come in and check on the place, maybe look in the closets or refrigerator. At least find out that the phone was hung up voluntarily.
